The addition to the original 1950’s in line ranch style house creates an “offset T” shape, providing two very different patio experiences.

The first, between the addition and the existing garage, is an intimate meditative space lined with bamboo to screen the existing garage. The second serves as a gathering point for the whole house uniting the living room, dining room and master bedroom in indoor/outdoor living.

The addition replaces the original, dark non functioning kitchen while adding a new informal dining space and family room in one large space. Within the family room, a high bay “pop up” facing north brings soft diffuse light high into the space adding to the perception of space. All doors fully retract to make the connection between the indoor room and the outdoor patio rooms minimal.

The windows are shaped to take advantage of views - a horizontal mitered corner window relates to the horizon and bay beyond while slot windows direct views to specific objects and provide an ever-changing quality of light throughout the day as the sun moves from east to west.

The gathering patio visually connects to the natural landscape below via a water feature that ends in a contemplative pool. The water feature also provides some masking of the sound from the nearby airport and leads the home owner form the “built” to the “natural” landscape. The master bedroom area is provided privacy from neighbors through a thicket of bamboo, which has the added benefit of providing additional acoustic screening in the wind.
