This new water testing laboratory connects to, and upgrades the appearance of, the existing stucco headquarters of the Water District. The south ³public² face has high clerestory windows which wrap the analytical functions of the lab. These windows provide diffuse light into the lab reducing the need for artificial light thereby saving energy over the life of the building. A steel and wood cantilever screen protects against glare and heat gain while providing detail and texture to the exterior stucco facade.

Within the lab, ceiling heights at the circulation areas are lowered to conceal the main ductwork of the mechanical systems leaving the rest of the analytical space to open up towards the clerestory light creating a light filled airy work space. Within the office side of the lab, open landscape workstations in conjunction with the glass walled private offices and conference room on the east side of the building allow natural light to reach deep into the building and views to the exterior for all lab staff.
